Wyndham Clark is heading to Atlanta with a trophy in hand, confidence in his game and an opportunity to put the finishing touch on a memorable season. Clark’s victory at the BMW Championship provided another defining moment in what has become an outstanding 2026 campaign. Entering the final round at Bellerive Country Club with a comfortable advantage, Clark appeared poised for a relatively stress-free Sunday. Instead, the championship developed into a tense battle that required the combination of patience, power and resolve that has become a trademark of his best golf.

Rory McIlroy supplied the pressure. As Clark worked through an uneven final round, McIlroy steadily closed the gap, eventually erasing what had once been a five-shot deficit. What had looked like Clark’s tournament to lose suddenly became a head-to-head contest down the stretch. Clark’s response was emphatic. With the championship hanging in the balance, he birdied the final three holes, turning a tightly contested finish into a three-shot victory. His closing 70 left him at 17-under par for the championship and delivered his third PGA TOUR victory of the season.
It was a finish worthy of a FedExCup Playoff event, but perhaps more importantly, it demonstrated exactly why Clark will be among the players to watch when the season reaches its conclusion at the TOUR Championship. There was plenty to admire about Clark’s golf at Bellerive, particularly during the opening three rounds. Scores of 64, 64 and 65 allowed him to separate himself from one of the strongest fields of the season. Yet his finest work may have come when things stopped going according to plan.

Championship golf rarely rewards a player without first testing him. Clark faced that test Sunday afternoon. His advantage disappeared, McIlroy had the momentum and every shot suddenly carried considerably more weight. Clark never surrendered. His three consecutive closing birdies were more than a spectacular way to win a golf tournament. They were another reminder that Clark has become increasingly comfortable in golf’s biggest moments.
Now the attention shifts to East Lake Golf Club and the TOUR Championship, where the top 30 players in the FedExCup standings will gather for the final event of the season. Unlike the Starting Strokes format once used at East Lake, every player will begin the championship on equal terms. Four rounds of traditional stroke play will determine the FedExCup champion, creating a straightforward proposition for the players who have survived the season and the first two playoff events: play the best golf for 72 holes and take home the biggest prize.

Clark will certainly arrive as one of the favorites. His BMW Championship victory adds considerable momentum to a season already highlighted by three victories. Another win at East Lake would not simply give Clark the FedExCup; it would provide a remarkable conclusion to a season that has further elevated his standing among the game’s best players.
Scottie Scheffler will once again command plenty of attention. His consistency throughout the season has kept him near the center of virtually every conversation involving the game’s top players. At East Lake, however, season-long accomplishments offer no head start. Scheffler will have to produce four more outstanding rounds if he is to claim the FedExCup.

McIlroy should be equally intriguing. His Sunday charge at the BMW Championship fell short, but the manner in which he chased down Clark’s advantage demonstrated that his game is ready for the season finale. Few players are more dangerous when momentum begins building, and East Lake provides McIlroy with another opportunity to turn a near miss into a championship.
Beyond the established stars, the TOUR Championship traditionally provides a revealing look at players who have quietly assembled outstanding seasons. With only 30 competitors remaining, there is nowhere for an emerging contender to hide. One strong opening round can dramatically reshape the championship, while one poor afternoon can quickly bring a season-long pursuit to an end.
That unpredictability may be the most appealing storyline of all. The FedExCup Playoffs began with an entire season’s worth of possibilities. Now only one tournament remains. There are no more opportunities to accumulate points, climb the standings or survive until another week. East Lake represents the finish line. And Wyndham Clark arrives there having just provided a convincing example of how quickly a championship can turn.

At Bellerive, he watched a commanding advantage disappear and then answered with his finest golf when he needed it most. Three holes, three birdies and another trophy. Next week in Atlanta, the stakes become even greater. If Clark can summon that same closing determination at East Lake, his BMW Championship victory may ultimately be remembered not as the culmination of his playoff run, but as the beginning of one final championship charge.
