Scottie Scheffler captured the 2026 FedEx St. Jude Championship in emphatic fashion, finishing at 17-under par and winning by eight shots to open the FedExCup Playoffs with a performance that felt less like a victory and more like a warning. The triumph was the 21st PGA Tour title of his career and his first since winning The American Express in January.
For a player whose standards have become almost impossibly high, calling Scheffler’s previous seven months a drought seems slightly absurd. He had continued to pile up high finishes and contend with remarkable regularity. What had been missing was the Sunday trophy.

In Memphis, there was little doubt about where that trophy was headed. The defining moment came Friday, when Scheffler fired a brilliant 9-under 61 to tie the TPC Southwind course record. It provided the separation that would eventually become a gulf. He followed with a steady third-round 68 and, even after encountering some early trouble Sunday, quickly restored order. By the back nine, the question was no longer whether Scheffler would win, but by how much.
The victory also strengthened his grip on the FedExCup standings at exactly the right moment. Scheffler entered the postseason as the regular-season points leader and now heads toward the BMW Championship with another trophy, renewed momentum and the look of a player determined to finish the season the way he began the playoffs — in control.
But the FedExCup Playoffs are designed to create pressure throughout the leaderboard, and Memphis delivered plenty of drama beyond Scheffler’s runaway victory. The field now shrinks to 50 players for the BMW Championship, scheduled for August 20-23 at Bellerive Country Club outside St. Louis. From there, only the top 30 in the FedExCup standings will advance to the TOUR Championship at East Lake.

That makes Bellerive considerably more than another tournament stop. For many players, it represents the final opportunity to extend their season. One of the most intriguing stories will be Rory McIlroy. The former FedExCup champion endured a difficult week in Memphis, finishing 8-over and near the bottom of the field in his first tournament since The Open Championship. McIlroy acknowledged that his swing felt far from where he wanted it, particularly from tee to green. He nevertheless advanced comfortably, sitting 13th in the FedExCup standings.
That creates a fascinating contrast heading into St. Louis. Scheffler arrives with virtually every part of his game operating at a championship level. McIlroy arrives searching for answers. Yet the playoff format leaves enough opportunity for fortunes to change quickly, and a rejuvenated McIlroy remains one of the few players capable of matching Scheffler when his game catches fire.
The other drama will take place around the top-30 line. Sungjae Im produced one of the most important performances in Memphis, moving from 53rd to 40th in the FedExCup standings to earn his place at Bellerive. Others were not so fortunate. Jordan Spieth’s encouraging opening-round 65 ultimately wasn’t enough, as he finished the week tied for 19th and ended the postseason 52nd in the standings. Keith Mitchell slipped to 51st, while Matt McCarty held the 50th and final position.

Now the arithmetic becomes even more unforgiving. Fifty players arrive at Bellerive. Only 30 leave with tee times at East Lake. There is also the course itself. Bellerive has long carried the feel of a major-championship venue, and its return to the playoff spotlight should provide an imposing stage for the season’s penultimate event. With fewer players and increasingly significant consequences attached to every shot, the BMW Championship has the ingredients to become one of the most compelling weeks of the year.
Yet every storyline begins with Scheffler. His victory in Memphis was a reminder of the relentless consistency that has defined his place atop professional golf. Scheffler didn’t simply survive the first week of the playoffs. He seized it, turning one of the strongest fields of the season into a runaway.

The FedExCup Playoffs are supposed to narrow the field and increase the pressure with each passing week. They have done exactly that. The question heading to Bellerive is whether anyone can narrow the gap on Scottie Scheffler.
