There is something about Wentworth that seems to bring out the best in a player when the pressure is greatest. On Sunday afternoon, J.J. Spaun answered that challenge in impressive fashion, producing a stirring finish to capture the 2026 BMW PGA Championship and add another significant title to his growing résumé.
Playing the famed West Course for the first time in competition, Spaun closed with a five-under-par 67 to finish at 17 under, two strokes clear of a distinguished group of challengers. But the final score tells only part of the story. Spaun secured the championship with a brilliant display of late-round golf, making four birdies over his final five holes when there was little room for error.

Beginning the day one shot off the lead, Spaun remained patient as the leaderboard shifted throughout the afternoon. Wentworth rarely gives up its prizes easily, and with Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, Aaron Rai and Spain’s Manuel Elvira among those in contention, Spaun knew that steady golf alone would probably not be enough.
His opportunity arrived at the 14th. A birdie there began a remarkable closing run. Spaun followed with birdies at the 15th and 16th, suddenly moving from contender to the man everyone else was chasing. After a par at the 17th, he stepped onto Wentworth’s famous 18th hole knowing another birdie could prove invaluable.

Spaun reached the par-5 finishing hole in two and calmly two-putted for birdie, completing his 67 and establishing the clubhouse lead at 17 under. Then came the waiting. Elvira provided one final challenge, making eagle at the 17th to draw even with Spaun. With another par 5 awaiting, the championship remained very much undecided. But Wentworth’s finishing hole can be as unforgiving as it is inviting, and Elvira’s difficulties around the green resulted in a double bogey. Spaun, watching from off the course, was suddenly the BMW PGA champion.
The victory continued an impressive period in Spaun’s career. Already a U.S. Open champion, the American demonstrated at Wentworth that his measured, dependable style of golf is equally effective on an international stage. His ability to remain composed while surrounded by accomplished challengers was perhaps the defining characteristic of his performance.

There was also a touch of redemption to the week. Spaun arrived in England following the disappointment of being left off the United States Presidents Cup team. Rather than allowing that setback to define the closing weeks of his season, he responded in the most convincing manner possible—with a trophy.
His victory also earned him a place in select company. Spaun became just the third American to capture the BMW PGA Championship, following Arnold Palmer and Billy Horschel, an impressive distinction considering the tournament’s long history and its standing as one of European golf’s premier championships.

For Spaun, however, the lasting memory of Wentworth will surely be those closing holes on Sunday. Championship golf has always been about recognizing the moment and having the courage to seize it. Spaun did exactly that. Four birdies in five holes, a closing 67 and a victory against one of the strongest fields of the season. On a course steeped in tradition, J.J. Spaun added his own name to Wentworth history.
