The long road to the FedExCup has reached its final stop, and the chase is now underway at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. The 2026 TOUR Championship began Thursday, bringing together the PGA Tour’s top 30 players for four days that will ultimately decide the season-long champion.
Unlike the old Starting Strokes format, every player begins the championship on equal footing. There are no advantages based on FedExCup position and no strokes awarded before the opening tee shot. The formula is refreshingly simple: 72 holes of stroke play, with the winner at East Lake also claiming the FedExCup and its $10 million first-place prize from a $40 million purse.

That puts even greater importance on every shot as play unfolds. Scottie Scheffler entered the week atop the FedExCup standings and remains one of the central figures in the championship, but his season-long success guarantees him nothing once competition begins. BMW Championship winner Wyndham Clark arrived third in the standings, while a collection of established stars and emerging contenders gives the finale the depth expected from the Tour’s most exclusive field.
East Lake, a par-70 layout measuring 7,440 yards, provides an appropriately demanding stage. The historic Atlanta club has witnessed many of the FedExCup era’s defining moments, and its combination of precision, patience and pressure should again become increasingly important as the tournament moves toward Sunday.

There is also history waiting to be made. Defending champion Tommy Fleetwood returns after capturing last year’s TOUR Championship at 18-under par, while former East Lake champions throughout the field understand exactly what is required when the pressure rises.
For now, the championship is only beginning. But with the FedExCup on the line and the PGA Tour season down to its final four rounds, every birdie, bogey and momentum-changing putt at East Lake carries a little more weight.
The season-long chase is over. The final race has begun.
